The Reviews Are In: Power in the Blood
Buffy’s brand new album Power in the Blood was released on May 12, 2015, and since has received incredible reviews from all over the world. Some highlights are below.
“Buffy Sainte-Marie has come up with an album to compare with her best…she makes every track count, with a sense of both urgency and stoicism. With dreamy lullabies, hypnotic love songs & pointed politics all delivered with emotional stridency, she blends rich musicality with the force of righteous conviction.” – The Telegraph
“An eclectic bunch of songs both in terms of subject matter (love songs sit alongside examinations of social issues) and sound (full-on rock pushes up against electronics and folk).” – Billboard
“Sounds as vital and as urgent as ever…In fact, Power In The Blood might just be the best album she’s made since the late 1960s. This thing is an utter triumph…Brilliant stuff. Power In The Blood is a masterpiece in a storied career.”- Exclaim! (9/10)
“Hard-hitting… poignantly—and powerfully—expressed.”- The Georgia Straight
“Buffy, now 74, did it her way. End of story.”- Vogue
“Calling Buffy Sainte-Marie just a folksinger is like saying Herbie Hancock is a piano player…(Power in the Blood is) explosive.”- The Province
“Jaw-dropping in its intensity, messaging, musicality and total disregard for gentrification.”- Now
“Buffy is a remarkable artist. Words spew out, melodies rotate & a spell is cast. She has lost none of her power.” – Record Collector (4 stars)
“A dozen songs that ingeniously combine her folk roots with techno beats and rhythms bringing a new validity and vitality to her Native-American-inspired craft.” – Hi-Fi News (91/100)
“This is the latest opus of an artist in perpetual motion, someone who still has something to say.” – R2 Mag (4 Stars)
“The Canadian-born First Nations legend pulls no punches on her new album.”- Hello Magazine
“Buffy has the extraordinary power to take songs old & new, written by herself or others & make them freshly pertinent, universal, yet distinctly her own.” – The Independent (4 Stars)
“The Cree folkie in fine bellicose form.” – Mojo (3 Stars)
“Propulsive and profound, urgent and exhilarating, timeless anthems of resistance, protest and peace.” – CBC Music
